SYTYCD (Episode 6) – Top 10 Dancers

The moment that everyone waits in each season — The Top 10 Dancers, and ultimately, the contestants who will go on the SYTYCD tour. As I told my readers last week, the “spoiler” presented was that Jessica King is injured, so the only fair thing the judges and producers could do was to bring back the most recent eliminated female contestant — Comfort Fedoke.

In continuation with my summer infatuation of SYTYCD – Season 4, this is a summary of the Top 10 dancers! Similar to my last review about the dances, this blog will be different from the rest of my SYTYCD blogs, for I will not put my opinions because there were too many routines. Actually, I only disagreed with the judges on a few instances, which I will make sure to point out. One of my favorite parts regarding the start of the Top 10 are the solos. I love watching people perform strong dancers in their own element. It really allows you to see their versatility and passion through their movements.

Now… who will the new SYTYCD couples be this week?

Couple 1: (Courtney and Josh) —

Hip Hop (First Performance):
Judges: First, this was one of the hottest routines of the entire season~ Lil C told this couple that the choreography was great and the routine was extremely interesting… “Josh, you killed it and Courtney, you were really good,” said Lil C. Mary added, they had amazing chemistry and she loved the whole routine, although Josh stole the show for her. Nigel responded that Courtney kept the character and he loved Josh in this performance.

Rumba (Second Performance):
Judges: I might need my asthma pump… I loved that routine, exclaimed Lil C. He added that Josh was so confident, but one advice is to not let the viewers show that you are about to do something fantastic – just let it happen. Mary said “Amazing nuances and hip rolls…that extra energy and subtle sexiness is just fantastic. Nigel had nothing else to say, but agree with the other two judges.

Couple 2: (Kherington and Mark) –

Country Two-Step (First Performance):
Judges: Honestly, even before they selected their dance style, I felt bad that they were paired together. Something just read awkward when I heard they were partners. As for their routine, Lil C said it was a fun routine and they tried to attack it, but it didn’t always come from the angle that it should have. He ended up calling it a ‘justifiable presentation.’ Mary told the couple that this was a tough number and it really didn’t work for them that well. Nigel added that there wasn’t much chemistry in that performance. Furthermore noted that Kherington has to learn to trust her partner.

Jazz (Second Performance):
Judges: Lil C noted that Kherington has an excellent center for nailing those turns. Mary told them that she is not jumping out of her seat… It was a good routine, but it didn’t make her feel anything. She added that she felt Mark is a little lost if he doesn’t have a character. Nigel compared this performance to a driving test. According to Nigel, “you passed the test, but it wasn’t that great… I don’t think it will make people pick up their phone and vote for you.”

Couple 3: (Comfort and Twitch) —

Smooth Waltz (First Performance):
Judges: First, I want to say how brave it was for Comfort to return. She understand the implications involved, but as a dancer, she knew this was another opportunity to prove herself and had to take it on. As for the performance, Lil C said that he enjoyed the routine, although some of the dance steps weren’t fluid enough. He also noted, “Comfort, I have never seen you so graceful on this show before.” Mary said this performance was lacking so much power, but Comfort looked elegant and Twitch you did a decent job on portraying your part. Nigel concluded that this wasn’t strong enough for the top 10 dancers – - the lift was fantastic though.

Hip Hop (Second Performance):
Judges: After sitting quietly for 10 seconds, Lil C turns around and says “that was kind of buck!” He described it as “internal artistry meets physical expression,” and compares Twitch to their choreography Dave Scott. He adds that is the best he has ever seen Comfort for a hip hop routine. Although Mary admitted that she doesn’t sound right saying buck, she exclaimed “I think it was buck too!” You both really stepped it up — Comfort, you are on fire and Twitch, holy smokes! After being disappointed with the first performance, Nigel says “looked like you were dancing for the joy of it and that gives us so much to applaud… Comfort, you were keeping up with him and I hope Jessica feels well represented because Comfort is back!”

Couple 4: (Katee and Will) –

Broadway (First Performance):

Judges: Lil C started his critique by applauding the versatility of Tyce Diorio. “Explosion in character and choreography… It was buck!” Mary added that Katee was so wonderful in this number and Will is one of the most serious and focused dancers. Nigel said this performance was terrific and adds that it really shows that Will just isn’t a technician. He noted that he still can’t believe how close they were to not bringing her on the show.
Pas de Deux (Second Performance):
Judges: This performance was absolutely beautiful. Lil C noted that he feels nervous critiquing this because it was such a great routine. He adds that dancers have such a difficult time because they have to manifest what the choreographer wants to see.. “You really delivered,” says Lil C. Holding back tears, Mary says “beautiful song, choreography, and dancers! It was absolute artistry in motion.” Nigel complimented the choreographers (Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden) for their versatility. He said that he doesn’t think that he has seen such wonderful dancing from the pair of them, and that is difficult to say because you two are wonderful.
Couple 5: (Chelsie and Gev) –
Contemporary (First Performance):
Judges: Lil C said they really committed to the performance. Mary said that she loved the chemistry and proud of Gev. Nigel felt that Sonya’s routine was amazing, but admitted that he thinks Gev may have Courtney on his mind because he didn’t seem that focused. He added Chelsie was fantastic and she really wanted/craved him in this routine.
Jive (Second Performance):
Judges: Lil C said, “She out-stepped you, Gev… Chelsie, your legs are like lightning. Gev, there are many times you weren’t there and Cheslie had enough confidence to do it without you.” Mary said that this was a good way to end the show. She added that Gev missed a few steps, but it was good. Nigel concluded that Chelsie was outstanding and noted that Gev seemed lost in a few steps, but can’t complain about the overall performance.
Top 10 Dancers (SOLOS):
1.) Chelsie – Really good solo… What else do we expect?
2.) Gev - – We have seen much better solos from him. This was not that good at all.
3.) Courtney – Amazing versatility shown in her solo.
4.) Mark – Quirky personality and interesting to watch.
5.) Comfort – When she is in her element, she is in her element! Phenomenal soloist.
6.) Twitch – AMAZING solo! Twitch constantly delivers!
7.) Katee – The only thing I can do is show it… Incredible!
8.) Will  — Not enough words to describe this talented young brother.
9.) Kherington – I like her, but she seems to be off lately.
10.) Josh – Had a really seductive solo. Phenomenal dancer!

Prediction of Bottom Two Girls:

1.) Comfort — They always seem to want her there.

2.) Kherington — This week is not looking good for her.

Prediction of Bottom Two Guys:

1.) Mark — He was much better with Chelsie

2.) Gev — He really shocked me with his bad performances and solo this week.

Who will be eliminated this week?

If these are the two bottom girls and two bottom guys, I believe that Comfort and Gev will be eliminated. This season has been too predictable thus far, so I do secretly hope something will stir up the competition.
